Libya reports that at least 27 migrants from other countries in Africa have died in the desert near the border with Tunisia in recent days. Eight migrants were found alive.
A statement from the Libyan interior ministry said the bodies were discovered near the border and a forensic team has been sent to the area. Photos accompanying the Facebook post show African migrants being treated by Libyan medical teams.
The National Human Rights Committee in Libya suspects that Tunisian security forces forcibly forced the migrants across the border and left them in the desert without water or food.
According to the same committee, a total of more than 750 African immigrants have been expelled from Tunisia to Libya since July.
eu-deal
Less than a month ago, the EU concluded a controversial deal with the Tunisian government on limiting migration flows to the European Union. Tunisia will introduce stricter border controls in exchange for investment from the EU. Outgoing Prime Minister Rutte said the EU will monitor Tunisia’s human rights monitoring.
These human rights are increasingly being violated in the country. President Kais Saied, who came to power democratically in 2019, has seized all power in the country in recent years. Parliament has been paralyzed and many opposition politicians, journalists and activists have been imprisoned.
According to Amnesty International, the deal will cause “enormous suffering” at Europe’s external borders.
