It’s all over. The great battles have been lost, the loot gone, and Danny Ryan flees into an uncertain future with few followers. He saved his son and father, but couldn’t even bury his wife. The journey leaves the actors sad because there is not much left. Danny has turned many mafia families against him and both criminals and the police are looking for him. Surprisingly, the authorities make Danny an offer that could solve his financial problems and allow him to lead a reasonably normal life. A risky plan to take down a dangerous drug lord could be the solution – or his downfall.
After the tragic death of his wife, Danny Ryan has settled in California with his son. Since moving, he’s more influential than ever. When a movie about New England gang wars is about to be filmed, Danny heads to Hollywood to put the producers in their place… But he raises new enemies who don’t want him interfering with their West Coast operations . And soon another war is coming…

In the previous book, City on Fire, the plot referred to Homer’s Iliad, where Greeks and Trojans fought. In the current volume, the story is inspired by Virgil’s Aeneid. Here the hero Aeneas, together with his father and son, embarks on a long journey after the fall of his city, which finally leads them to Carthage. There Aeneas’ mother Venus binds him to the Carthaginian queen Dido. In Winslow, Dido’s role is filled by a Hollywood actress since the story takes place in the movie star era. This woman, to whom Danny Ryan has a special connection, basically repeats what led to bloody conflicts on the east coast between the Irish and Italians.

Incidentally, Winslow plans to quit writing after the release of the third volume in the trilogy and devote himself to the fight against ex-President Donald Trump. In his work, he lets the main character experience a diverse range of the American dream and the constant movement, which also keeps the book very timely. The thriller is recommended for fans of Stephen King, Stieg Larsson, Cormac McCarthy, Michael Hjorth and Hans Rosenfeld (“The Fruits That One Reaps”), as well as the films of Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino.
Don Winslow „City of Dreams“: Fazit
“City of Dreams” reads calmer than its predecessor. In order not to be overwhelmed by the many character constellations, it is advisable to read the first volume in advance. Even if the first battles of the plot are still a bit restrained here, this should increase to a grandiose finale in the third volume.
