(Vatican News Network) Cardinal Michael Czerny, Prefect of the Congregation for the Promotion of Integral Human Development, attended the General Assembly of the Federation of Churches of the Amazon in Manaus, Brazil, from August 8 to 11. A few hours after his arrival in the Amazon, the cardinal visited the fringes of the region before the meeting to get acquainted with the situation of the community.
Accompanied by Cardinal Leonard Steiner of the diocese of Manaus, Cardinal Czerny met with members of the St John Paul II Mission, which consists of several urban and rural communities. Cardinal Czerny’s first contact with the local community was with the archbishop of Manaus, Cardinal Stirnier, the auxiliary bishop Tadeu Canavarro, as well as the Caritas, the Catholic College of the Amazon, the pastoral ministry Coordinators and members of other pastoral bodies.
At the end of his visits to these groups, Cardinal Czerny expressed his great joy because he “recognized the real situation and the challenges faced by people who long to share their rich lives with those in need”. In these meetings, the cardinal noted, the first thing to do is to meet “people in distress, people who suffer”. “It’s about listening to those who suffer and trying to move forward with them.”
Cardinal Czerny then noted the diversity of those who took part in the meeting, from the elderly to children and youth. The Prefect of the Congregation for the Promotion of Integral Human Development also pointed out what he learned during the meeting, saying: “Don’t be afraid to listen and be heard, go forward together and help each other.” Finally, he thanked the groups present for their good example , and ask everyone to do “what Jesus asked us to do, love our neighbor”.
