Why Prince William Doesn’t Wear a Kilt: The Break with Tradition in the British Royal Family

Royalty Despite the deep-rooted bond between the British royal family and Scotland, Prince William (41) has decided not to follow in the footsteps of his ancestors. He abandoned the traditional kilt from the age of ten, and as an adult he has never worn this costume in public. A choice that contrasts with the customs of his father, who can regularly be seen in the traditional Scottish kilt.

King Charles (74) has never shied away from wearing the kilt, part of Scottish traditional clothing. During his visits to Scotland, it is very common to see the British monarch in a kilt. But it seems that his son, Prince William, has not adopted this age-old tradition.

This decision by the heir to the throne is not well received by the Scots. They are dissatisfied that William often opts for more formal attire, rather than the traditional Scottish attire, at events in Scotland. Especially since William bears the ceremonial title of ‘Lord of the Islands’, a title with historical roots that go beyond the Kingdom of Scotland.

Break with the past

However, during his early childhood, William still wore kilts. There are several images showing him wearing the traditional garment. At Balmoral Castle, the kilt was therefore an established part of the dress code, and William also had to comply with this as a child. This tradition started with George IV, Queen Victoria’s uncle, wearing a specific model. And that model has been the ‘standard’ within the royal family for more than a century.

But from his tenth birthday, William abandoned this tradition. Since then, the prince has exchanged the kilt for long trousers. Even during his graduation from the University of St Andrews, where he was offered a kilt, he chose not to wear it. And while no official explanation has ever been given as to why, royal experts suggest William suffered “childhood trauma” from the constant expectation of wearing the kilt. It is even suggested that William may have made a “secret pact” with Queen Elizabeth that exempted him from this tradition and allowed him to follow his own dress preferences.
