The exhibition was organized in cooperation with the Madrid cultural project company “diChroma photography”. The exhibition of photo art is the joint work of two creatively bright personalities – Sandro Miller, an American photographer of Cuban origin, and John Malkovich, a prominent American film and theater actor. They have been friends for years, and Malkovich has been Miller’s model on several occasions.
In the series of works “Malkovich, Malkovich, Malkovich: Homage to Photographic Masters” (“Malkovich, Malkovich, Malkovich: Homage to Photographic Masters”) Sandro Miller paraphrases the images created by several classics of photography of the 20th century – both portraits of celebrities and images of unknown people who have become famous due to specific photographs. The compositions, lighting, poses and clothing of the models are reconstructed in the paraphrases of the original, iconic photographs. Only the people depicted – Irving Penn’s cornered Truman Capote, Burt Stern’s stripped Marilyn Monroe, Dorothea Lange’s classic immigrant mother, Richard Avedon’s Man with Bees, Robert Mapplethorpe’s self-portrait and many others – have been replaced by John Malkovich himself. “The tandem of artists – a photographer and an actor – creates an exciting and critical game between canonized images and their repetitions, ironically commenting on the influence of individual personalities and images in the development of photography,” describes the series of works by the creators of the exhibition.

Sandro Miller (1958) has achieved success in advertising and portrait photography, working with influential brands and magazines. At the same time, he develops art projects in the field of photography and cinema. The author’s personal exhibitions have been held on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean – from his home in Chicago to European and Asian museums and exhibition halls.
The series of works under consideration in Riga has received wide recognition – it has been exhibited, reproduced and reviewed many times. Nine years after the first exhibition at the Catherine Edelman Gallery in Chicago (“Catherine Edelman Gallery”, 2014) and the presentation at the Arles Photo Festival (“Les Rencontres d’Arles Photographie”, 2015), it will also be available to those interested in Latvia.
