Lionel Messi (36) caused a storm of enthusiasm with his arrival at Inter Miami in mid-July. Goalkeeper Nick Marsman (32) previously advised his club against signing the superstar – and may have lost his job as a result.
Marsman was the reliable backup keeper at Miami for almost two years. All the more surprising was the news that the Dutchman was suddenly thrown out.
“Inter Miami CF announced today that they have exercised an opportunity to buy out of Major League Soccer (MLS) goalkeeper Nick Marsman’s contract,” the club said in a statement.
In the MLS, each team is allowed to kick exactly one player during the offseason despite an ongoing contract. In return, however, the club must pay the victim a severance package, which appears to have been done in Marsman’s case.
Lionel Messi: Marsman expressed concerns about the transfer
Marsman’s surprise dismissal, meanwhile, could be linked to the negative comments the goalkeeper made in June on the looming Messi transfer. In his opinion, Inter were ‘not ready’ for the Barça icon’s arrival at the time.
“We’re playing in a transitional stadium, fans can just walk onto the pitch and there are no barriers. We leave the stadium without security,” Marsman told ESPN about Messi. “Nevertheless, I hope he comes.”
It is not clear at this time whether the goalkeeper’s warnings actually fell on his feet. In addition to regular keeper Drake Callender (25), the Inter Miami squad includes two other goalkeepers in CJ dos Santos (22) and Cole Jensen (22). The club could have simply used the offseason to get rid of some ballast.
