Colombia beat Jamaica 1-0 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Women’s World Cup, today (8), at Rectangular Stadium, in Melbourne. It was the first goal of the South American team in the knockout stage in history. Now the Colombians are preparing to face England in the quarterfinals.
Catalina Usme was the one who secured the classification at the beginning of the second half.
Colombia reaches the quarterfinals for the first time in history. In the round of 16, he had already played in 2015. In 2011, he did not pass the group stage.
With a majority in the stadium, the Colombian fans made noise since the national anthem. There was no lack of support throughout the match, with chants, boos and encouragement. Jamaicans were also present and encouraged.
In the final minutes, the expectation and excitement increased and the Colombians could no longer watch the game sitting down, as well as the athletes on the bench.
Linda Caicedo had her name sung several times, but was stuck with the Jamaican tag.
Jamaica, who eliminated Brazil with the best campaign in the group stage, was unable to show offensive strength and play. Therefore, it leaves the Cup with just one goal scored against Panama.
How was the game
The first half started well studied between the two teams. Colombia had more possession, but found it difficult to finish with more danger. Jamaica even had a few attempts to arrive, but it didn’t manage to scare much.
The game was truncated and few chances in the first 45 minutes. In the final straight, possession of the ball evened out, but the level of emotion really wasn’t very high.
Everything changed quickly in the second half, with a goal from Colombia in the sixth minute. This forced Jamaica to go out more to seek the goal, but the Colombians continued to press to expand.
At 20 minutes of the second half, the Colombian crowd was already singing the traditional “olé”. They also chanted the “si, se puede” throughout the game.
Both teams were very dangerous in the final minutes and lifted the stadium with good opportunities. Even ahead on the scoreboard, Colombia was not shy, but Jamaica also arrived as they could.
