In modern society, electronic devices are an indispensable part of a teenager’s life. However, excessive use of electronic devices brings various negative results such as cardiovascular problems, cognitive decline, and increased psychological problems.
According to a study published in the medical journal 《Journal of Affective Disorders》, the risk of encountering emotional problems increases when adolescents watch a lot of screens of electronic devices such as smartphones before going to bed. In particular, the negative impact of watching electronic devices becomes more pronounced as the screen time approaches the sleeping time.
The researchers conducted two separate surveys of Chinese high school students. The 2685 and 1368 students in each survey answered questions about screen use before bedtime, chronotype (the timing of biological clocks), social jet lag (the discrepancy between biological and social rhythms), and emotional issues.
Focusing on two factors: chronotype and social jet lag, the researchers investigated how adolescents’ electronic screen viewing before bedtime affected their emotional problems and sleep patterns.
The study found that adolescents who watch electronic device screens before sleeping tend to have late chronotypes and experience greater social jet lag. This also increases the risk of experiencing emotional problems.
Adolescents with a late chronotype also had difficulty with an early morning schedule, leading to a discrepancy between biological and social clocks. This disagreement led to emotional difficulties.
Misalignment of biological and social clocks can lead to social jet lag, which can lead to emotional distress.
Meanwhile, previous studies have shown that exposure to blue light from electronic devices can disrupt circadian rhythms, delaying sleep and delaying chronotype.
