E Notte di a Mandulina: Traditional Mandolin Event in Corte, Corsica

The fifth edition of E notte di a mandulina will take place in Corte from August 12 to 13. Organized by the Mandeo association, this event will be articulated around workshops, conferences and concerts. “People need to hear this instrument again”, supports Antoine Leonelli, artistic director of Mandeo. “We have therefore, once again, invited renowned artists to make us hear a traditional repertoire but also creations. An event which is also part of other pillars such as training, with practical workshops so that young and old have something to put under their fingers. We try to develop this event with a musical awareness with the aspect of oral tradition but not only since we also invite people to read music theory more and more. While on August 9 and 10, a master class will take place led by two teachers, namely Cécile Valette-Soarat and Fabio Gallucci, members of the Quintette à Plectre de France”.

The mandolin is an emblematic instrument not only of Corte, but also of all of Corsica. But in recent years this instrument has benefited from a bad old-fashioned cliché. Despite everything, it remains in the ears of people who knew this period until about thirty years ago. Knowing that the real golden age of the mandolin is between the two wars. “It is this spirit that we want to revive with our association with this traditional repertoire specific to Corte where mandolinists like Petru Filippi, Antoine Blanchenoix, Gaston Pietri, Ernest Agostini, Joachim Martinetti or closer to us Antoine Albertini have appropriate Neapolitan, Florentine or even Roman pieces”.

The association hopes that through this event, but also thanks to the training provided throughout the year, the mandolin will find favor with young musicians, especially since the creation, at the start of the next school year, of a branch of the Conservatory of Bastia should strongly contribute to this as well. “I don’t have a backward-looking discourse, but I believe that one can be an actor in today’s society. And I believe that the mandolin has all the assets that would allow it to find the paths of the Cortenaise alleys. We have to give the mandolin a dedicated space to find it on a stage and the conservatory will allow us that. At least, I hope so”, concluded Antoine Leonelli who also wanted to thank the CdC, the town hall of Corte as well as the Centru di Corsica Tourist Office for their support allowing us to offer a free event.
