US State Department Refrains from Commenting on Imran Khan Arrest

A US State Department spokesman said on Monday that the arrest of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan was an “internal matter”, refusing to take a position on Khan’s legal problems even though he was often critical of the United States.

Police arrested Khan in Lahore on Saturday after a court sentenced him to three years in prison for illegally selling gifts received by the state while he was in power. A guilty verdict may prevent the Pakistani opposition leader from running in elections later this year.

Khan denies any wrongdoing and says he was framed by the government and powerful military.

When asked if the United States believed Khan had a fair trial, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told a news briefing today, “We believe this is an internal matter of Pakistan.”

“Sometimes there are cases (around the world) that are so obviously unfounded that the United States thinks they should say something about it. We’re not (yet) that convinced about (the Khan case),” Miller added. )”.
