Several tents outside the Sunset Park recreation center were brought to the neighborhood by volunteers.
The food and basic necessities were brought by the neighbors one year after the arrival of the first buses bringing thousands of asylum seekers.
“I work for Masbia Soup Kitchen and we’ve been here since last Saturday at 10:00 p.m. We brought water, we brought fruit, we tried to welcome all our brothers, and it’s really emotional to see that the community support this cause,” explained Rubén Díaz, volunteer, Masbia Soup Kitchen.
Moved too were the migrants, about 60 men inside the temporary facility planned to house up to 100.
“I’ve been staying here for about five days and thank God we’re fine, with the support of the people of Sunset Park,” said Lisandro Gabriel Tacamora-Brito, a Venezuelan asylum seeker. “Thank God they are bringing us support, food, supplies. Arriving in this country is hard but little by little one is recovering and establishing oneself.”
The groceries, basic necessities, school supplies, backpacks, and even padlocks so that immigrants could use the pool at the recreation center, are for all who require them, regardless of whether they come from Venezuela, Central America, or Mexico.
“It is a great blessing that people receive us with love, with food, because we really need it,” added Uber Vázquez, a recently arrived Mexican immigrant.
And the neighbors who brought donations and the volunteers here handing them out told us that they are no substitute for the City’s efforts to provide housing and services to these immigrants.
