Helicopters Crash Over Cabazon Brush Fire: 3 Killed
Three men tragically lost their lives in a mid-air collision between two helicopters involved in firefighting efforts over a brush fire in Cabazon on Sunday night. The crash occurred around 6 p.m. in the Cabazon area, just south of the Morongo Casino.
According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, a Bell helicopter, flown by a contract pilot with a California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) division chief and a Cal Fire air captain on board, was in an observer-coordinator role when it collided with a Sikorsky Skycrane helicopter. The Bell helicopter occupants did not survive the crash, while the two individuals on the Sikorsky helicopter landed safely and were uninjured.
The Sikorsky helicopter was believed to be dropping water or fire retardant during the brush fire response. Fixed-wing aircraft were also involved in the firefighting efforts.
The incident took place on Native American land, where firefighters were battling a 20-acre fire. The fire reportedly originated in a structure before spreading to the surrounding brush.
An ongoing investigation is being conducted to determine the factors that led to the mid-air collision. Authorities are working diligently to gather all necessary information.
During a news conference, Cal Fire Southern Region Chief David Fulcher expressed his condolences and support for the families of the victims. “This sacrifice should not be in vain, that we think about them, we will be there to support them,” he said. Chief Fulcher also mentioned that Chief Bill Weiser of the Riverside County Fire Department has already met with two of the family members and is working on meeting with the third. The firefighting community is committed to providing assistance and comfort to the grieving families.
Cal Fire confirmed that a total of six aircraft had responded to the firefighting effort. The Cabazon area is known for its light, flashy fuels, such as annual grasses and brush, which can quickly become a fire hazard. Combined with the strong winds in the area, these conditions pose a significant challenge for firefighters. The use of firefighting aircraft is crucial in stopping the spread of fires and protecting homes and lives.
The KCAL News Staff extends their deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.
