ÖBB orders new Railjet double-decker trains from Stadler

ÖBB is ordering further double-decker trains from the existing framework agreement with the vehicle manufacturer Stadler: 14 six-car trains for long-distance transport and 21 four-car trains for local transport with a total volume of around 600 million euros. The six-car sets are the first double-deck trains of the Railjet type. They are to be used from 2026. With the order, the Austrian Federal Railways are also reacting to the past record year with 41.6 million passengers in long-distance traffic.

The new six-car Railjet double-decker train is designed for a top speed of 200 km/h and offers around 480 seats. This means there is room for almost 19 percent more passengers than in the existing single-decker Railjet fleet. Due to its design, it enables faster passenger exchange and, with the high-acceleration railcar, is well suited for long-distance routes with frequent stops. Entry and exit is in the low-floor design. There are catering zones with vending machines for snacks and drinks, sockets and USB ports in every row of seats, free WiFi and the onboard portal ÖBB Railnet. For travelers with restricted mobility, there are also separate wheelchair spaces with height-adjustable side wall tables in the middle car of the trains.

In the first order from the framework agreement with Stadler, 20 six-car and 21 four-car Cityjet double-decker trains for local transport had already been ordered in April 2022. A further 21 four-car sets with a volume of around 300 million euros will now follow on the second call. (awm)
