Graffiti Defaces Glass Noise Barriers on Groningen’s New Ring Road

The first glass noise barriers of the new ring road in Groningen have been defaced by paint sprayers. A lot of people don’t talk about that.

Many noise barriers along the new ring road will soon consist of high planters with greenery protruding on all sides, but in some places this is not possible. There will be transparent glass panels with graphic drawings of roses.

Specially designed stuff that the designers didn’t think anyone would ever think of defacing. But shortly after placing the first screen along the A28, the time had come: a graffiti tag.

Pathetic

Facebook makes it clear what the project organization’s state of mind is: ,,We are trying to make the city a little more beautiful when converting the Southern Ring Road with red bricks, historical images under the viaducts and with glass panels. The fact that the panels have already been defaced makes us a bit sad. EKDA (or something like that), thanks!”

The organization writes that they have the panels cleaned. “That means extra work, extra costs and everyone in traffic jams once more. Because before cleaning we have to close the underpass again.”

This is the Van Iddekingeweg. Graffiti artists have been living there for years with the permission of the municipality on the white walls and pillars. But one of the performers did not stay under the overpass this time.
