Lancia is ready to make a comeback after years of limited activity with only the Ypsilon model, sold exclusively in Italy. Thanks to the commitment of Stellantis, led by Lancia CEO Luca Napolitano, the brand is preparing to relaunch with a new range of models. During the presentation of the Pu+Ra Zero concept, they showcased some details of the future models’ style.
2024 will mark the new beginning for Lancia with the launch of the new Ypsilon model, which will retain only the name of the current city car but will become a compact crossover measuring 4 meters in length to better suit city use and offer greater versatility. The big news could be the revival of the historic Lancia Delta.
In the release schedule, the return of the Lancia Delta is expected, taking the form of a high-performance SUV. According to the Lancia CEO, this model will be a serious contender as the automaker wants to preserve the historical charm of this name. In the past, the Delta was known for its balanced handling, interesting performance, and distinctive technical features.
The car had all-wheel drive, five doors, and five seats. Weighing 1,190 kg and measuring 3.99 m in length, the Delta had a trunk that could accommodate 200 to 940 liters of cargo. This model was presented in 1986, marketed in May 1987, and produced in 4,600 units, or possibly 5,298 according to another more reliable source. It was replaced by the Delta HF Integrale in 1988. The standard engine, derived from the Lancia Thema, had a slight weakness at low revs but was capable of delivering up to 190 hp in the Group N category and 240 hp in the Group A category of rallies.
The Lancia Delta Integrale demonstrated its potential by winning the Monte Carlo Rally and the Portugal Rally from its early outings. Although the production version had a well-designed hood and a long first gear that could be used in hairpin turns, the synchronization of the subsequent gears was not very responsive compared to newer models or the best of its time.
There are high expectations for the return of the Lancia Delta because it was a legendary car thanks to its exceptional record of success in sports competitions, as well as the character and efficiency of its production version. Despite its lower efficiency compared to later versions, the car’s behavior has always been sound and relatively easy to understand, already remarkable compared to the few integral models produced during its time.
The revival of the Lancia brand represents an important challenge for Jean-Pierre Ploué, Chief Design Officer of Stellantis, as it is an iconic brand that must regain the central role it had in the past in Europe. Ploué states that if a brand has a sporting heritage and needs to be revitalized, it will certainly be. Lancia Delta is an important part of the brand’s reconstruction and carries the name of a car that could be developed in the future.
How will the new Lancia models cater to different customer preferences, particularly in terms of interior space, connectivity options, and powertrain choices
Will reportedly be designed with a mix of modern and retro elements, paying homage to the original Delta while incorporating cutting-edge technology and innovative features. It is said to offer a spacious interior, advanced connectivity options, and a range of efficient powertrain options to cater to different customer preferences.
In addition to the new Ypsilon and Delta models, Lancia also has plans to introduce an all-electric vehicle in the near future. The company aims to leverage Stellantis’ electric vehicle expertise to develop a versatile and environmentally-friendly car that aligns with the brand’s values.
The return of Lancia has been eagerly anticipated by fans of the brand, who have been longing to see new models and innovations from the iconic Italian manufacturer. With the backing of Stellantis, Lancia now has the resources and support to make a successful comeback in the automotive market.
Lancia CEO Luca Napolitano expressed his excitement about the brand’s relaunch, stating that they are committed to preserving Lancia’s rich heritage and delivering exceptional vehicles that capture the essence of the brand’s identity. He believes that Lancia has a unique place in the market, offering a combination of elegance, innovation, and Italian craftsmanship that appeals to discerning customers.
Consumers can expect to see the new range of Lancia models hitting the market in the coming years, with the new Ypsilon set to debut in 2024 followed by the highly anticipated Delta SUV. The brand’s revival promises to inject new life into the automotive industry, providing consumers with exciting and distinctive options in the compact crossover and high-performance SUV segments.
I’m so excited to see the Lancia Delta making a comeback! Can’t wait to experience its legendary performance once again.
This is incredible news! The Lancia Delta was a true icon, and its return is long overdue. Looking forward to its revival and hoping it lives up to its legendary reputation.
