Tunisia has called on specialized international organizations to play their role in relief operations and in guaranteeing the basic needs of migrants in light of the important influx of recent times. This was stated in a statement by the Farnesina, published on its official Facebook account, in response to “reports and statements issued by international organizations and some press organs regarding the management by the Tunisian authorities of the unprecedented increase in flows and the situation of irregular migrants” in Tunisia.
The statement expressed Tunisia’s “categorical rejection of the errors and rumors that have taken the form of malicious campaigns behind which anonymous parties seek to inflame the situation, cover up the efforts made by the Tunisian state to guarantee protection, welcome and care for migrants, in an attempt to damage the image and interests of Tunisia”.
“Tunisia is committed to continuing to take all measures to protect its land and sea borders and to prevent any attempted illegal crossings,” the foreign ministry said.
He added that “We reaffirm that Tunisia will not be a country of transit or settlement for irregular migrants, while remaining committed to complying with all international and regional conventions, instruments and alliances regulating migration and the norms of international humanitarian law ”.
