Donald Trump’s Defense Strategy: Freedom of Expression and First Amendment Rights

With our correspondent in the United States, Thomas Harms

John Lauro, one of Donald Trump’s two lawyers, made the rounds of five Sunday political shows – ABC, NBC, CNN, CBS, FOX – to explain the former US president’s defense strategy: freedom of expression.

Donald Trump would not have ordered anything, just suggested to his interlocutors ways to proceed. Especially since being convinced of having won the 2020 election, everything would then be covered by the first amendment.

« When he protested the 2020 election results, it was pure free speech, defends Me Lauro. President Donald Trump did not order his Vice President Mike Pence to do anything. He asked her to put the vote on hold, in an “inspirational” way. Asking is protected by the First Amendment. »

Also on several political shows, former Vice President Mike Pence slams the defense of his former boss. According to him, there was no question of a break, but of a modification of the result of the election.

« His lawyers have suggested returning the votes to the states, he said. But frankly, if I remember correctly, the day before January 6, his lawyers came back to me and told me to reject votes, they asked me to reverse the election. »

Mike Pence, currently credited with 5% of the votes in the Republican primary, has no intention of testifying for the prosecution. On the other hand, former Justice Minister Bill Barr, accused by Trump of being a coward, said he was ready to testify.

For his part, Donald Trump is currently leading the primary with 53% of voting intentions. On his Truth Social network, the former president continued his quest for victimization by attacking the judge in charge of his case. He demands that she recuse herself.
