Japan Commemorates 78th Anniversary of Atomic Bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Highlights Nuclear Threat from Russia

Jakarta

Japan commemorates the 78th anniversary of the event atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. On that occasion, Japan also teased Russia about the dangers of the nuclear project.

Reported AFP, Sunday (6/8/2023) around 140,000 people died in Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 and 74,000 people died in Nagasaki three days later. At that time, the United States dropped atomic bombs on the two Japanese cities a few days before the end of World War II. Japan became a country that suffered greatly from this atomic bomb.

“Japan, as the only country that suffered atomic bombs in war, will continue efforts towards a nuclear-free world,” Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said at a ceremony in Hiroshima.

In this moment, Fumio Kishida also mentioned the abolition of nuclear weapons and Russia’s nuclear threat.

“The path to that is made all the more difficult because of the deepening divisions in the international community over Russia’s denuclearization and nuclear threat,” he said.

“Given this situation, it is all the more important to restore international momentum towards the realization of a nuclear-free world,” he added.

He hopes that the damage done to Hiroshima and Nagasaki will not be repeated.

“The devastation brought to Hiroshima and Nagasaki by nuclear weapons will never be repeated,” said Kishida, whose family is from Hiroshima.

At the memorial service, thousands of people — survivors, relatives and foreign dignitaries from 111 countries — prayed for those killed or injured in the bombing and called for world peace.

Russia and Belarus were not invited to the ceremony for the second year in a row because of the war in Ukraine.

The participants, many dressed in black, prayed in their hearts at 8:15 a.m. local time.

Meanwhile, Kishida has also tried to elevate disarmament or abolition of nuclear weapons to the global agenda. He also brought leaders of wealthy democracies to the Hiroshima Peace Park memorial and museum.
