Initiated with the aim of effectively combating pollution by ridding nature of plastic waste, the second edition of the 2023 plastic bottle challenge ended on August 3. After ten days, nearly 14 million plastic bottles have been collected. This operation, which benefited from the active participation of the Federation of Gabonese Enterprises (FEG), was completed in the Special Industrial Zone (ZIS) of Nkok. “In terms of results, it is precisely 13 million 815 thousand 881 PET bottles, or 261 tonnes of plastic bottles that were collected in our greater Libreville in just 10 days,” said Yannick Ongonwou Sonnet, High Commissioner for the Environment. and the living environment. “I have the firm conviction that it is possible for us to achieve the “Zero Plastic” objective and that is why I come to humbly express two wishes to our high authorities, firstly, the sustainability of this challenge and second, putting in place measures to effectively tackle plastic pollution,” said Anemone Mengome, CEO of Clean Africa.
For the government, it is a question of finding lasting and sustainable solutions to overcome this disaster. “The government is closely following the examination in Parliament of the bill to combat pollution by single-use plastics, which will include measures for prohibition, prevention and incentives, in particular for the private sector. , through extended producer responsibility. This law will make it possible to draw up and implement our national strategy more effectively”, declared Lee White, Minister of Water and Forests, the Sea, the Environment, in charge of the Climate Plan and the Land Use Plan. .
