Barbie Film Makes History – Surpasses $1 Billion Worldwide, Becomes First Female-Directed Movie to Do So

Barely three weeks after the release of Barbie the film has passed the $1 billion mark in ticket sales worldwide. It is the first female-directed film to reach this milestone.

The film by Greta Gerwig is the 53rd film to gross at least 1 billion dollars (about 907 million euros) worldwide at the box office of the cinema. In the first weekend after its release on July 21 Barbie already raised $ 110 million in the United States. That was another milestone for a film directed by a woman.

Currently it is Barbie still the third highest lucrative film of the year. Only The Super Mario Bros. Movie in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 made even more money.
