Erik Karlsson: Swedish Hockey Player Moves to Pittsburgh Penguins, Acquiring Remo Pitlick and Dillon Hamaliuk

Swedish hockey player Erik Karlsson is moving from San Jose to Pittsburgh. The Penguins also acquired forwards Remo Pitlick with Dillon Hamaliuk and a third-round pick in the 2026 draft.

The shark on the jersey of Swedish defender Erik Karlsson will be replaced by a penguin from the new season.

The “penguins” acquired new reinforcements as part of a three-man exchange between the Sharks and the Montreal Canadiens. The NHL clubs informed about it on their websites.

San Jose received forwards Mikael Granlund, Mike Hoffman, defenseman Jan Rutta and a 2024 first-round draft pick. Montreal received Pittsburgh’s 2025 second-round draft pick, defenseman Jeff Petry, goaltender Casey DeSmith and forward Nathan Legare.

Defender Karlsson is under contract until 2026/27 and has an average annual value of $11.5 million. San Jose keeps $1.5 million of his annual salary.

The Swedish defender won the Norris trophy as the best defenseman in the NHL for the third time in his career last season. He scored 25 goals, 76 assists and 101 points in 82 games for San Jose this year. He became the sixth defenseman in NHL history and the first since Brian Leetch in the 1991/92 season to score 100 points.

The seven-time All-Star played 14 seasons in the pro league with the Ottawa Senators (2009/18) and San Jose (2018/23), and collected 178 goals, 583 assists and 761 points in 920 career games.

Twenty-six-year-old Pitlick played most of the 2022/23 season for Montreal, but he also appeared in 18 duels in the AHL for the Laval Rocket. His contract runs through the end of 2023/24 with an average annual salary of $1.1 million.
