SYDNEY, AUGUST 6, WAM/ The Swedish national team continued its strong start in the ninth edition of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, by defeating its American counterpart 5-4 on penalties today, Sunday, in the second round (round of 16) of the tournament, which is currently being held in Australia and New Zealand.
The Swedish team qualified for the quarter-finals of the tournament after stripping the US team of its world title, which it won in the past two editions of the tournament.
The original and additional times of the match ended in a goalless draw, so the two teams resorted to penalty kicks, which decided qualification for the Swedish national team.
Each of the two teams wasted two penalty shootouts out of the five scheduled kicks, extending the penalty shootout marathon between them to 7 kicks each, and the Swedish team decided the confrontation after the seventh kick for the American team, which was hit by Kelly O’Hara, bounced off the post.
Sweden will meet Japan in the quarter-finals next Friday.
In another match today in the second round of the tournament, the Dutch national team defeated South Africa 2-0 to meet the Dutch national team in the quarter-finals with the Spanish national team.
