Bochum-Gerthe. In the youth center in Bochum-Gerthe, 140 children try out jobs. They earn the “Bo-Mark” and elect their mayors.
For a week, 140 young Bochum residents between the ages of six and 14 occupied the youth center U27 in Gerthe in the children’s town. The courtyard of the U27 had turned into a tent city. In the tents and in the house, the children and young people were able to try out a total of 22 jobs.
In the joinery, the young craftsmen worked together: they sawed up old pallets and used them to create furniture that is now used as a chill-out corner in the inner courtyard. The sewing machines rattled in the neighboring tent. In a sea of colorful fabrics, boys and girls sewed cushions for their children’s rooms. During working hours there is a lot of activity on the premises.
Bochum children also active online
In the ambulance tent, the children looked after teddy bears as patients, made initial diagnoses and helped with plasters and bandages. The bakery in the youth center delivered freshly baked cookies to the participants.
The children’s city was also active online: the social media team posted news on Instagram. Another highlight stood in the middle of the courtyard: a police patrol car. Accompanied by two police officers, the children took a close look at the vehicle.
Those who worked in the children’s town also received a salary: After the shift, the savings bank paid out the earned “Bo-Mark” in the tent branch. There is a queue of children all over the courtyard. Some children sprinted from the Sparkasse directly to the city kiosk to stock up on sweets. After work, there was free time: the children could spend their own money dancing in the disco or playing football in the gym.
Mayors in an exciting election campaign
The highest office in the children’s town was held by Mayoress Larissa and her deputy Jolina. After an exciting election campaign, the citizens elected the two to the top of the city. They had previously campaigned for votes with speeches they had written themselves. A guest was not to be missed at the inauguration ceremony: Lord Mayor Thomas Eiskirch (SPD) officially transferred power over the children’s town to Larissa and Jolina. He put a blue and white sash around the two. To ensure that the start of the term of office went smoothly, he was on hand to give the duo advice.
The popular holiday program took place for the third time – made possible by numerous contributors. The children’s town is also planned as part of the Bochum holiday pass for next year.
