Russian Air Defense Forces Intercept Ukrainian Drone Over Moscow

Russian air defense forces shot down a Ukrainian drone flying over Moscow on the morning of the 6th (local time), Moscow Mayor Sergei Soviyanin said.

Mayor Sobiyanin told the message app Telegram that an aptitude drone approached Moscow at 11:00 a.m. (5:00 p.m. Korean time) on the same day.

During the first six months of the invasion, Ukraine attacked entirely within the territory occupied by Russian forces, but since August of last year, Ukraine has intermittently attacked Belgorod, a border region in the west of Russia bordering the Crimean Peninsula and Donbass under Kherson Province, with unmanned aerial vehicles.

It was Ukraine’s offensive that broke the perception of Russians that “battles are fought only on Ukrainian soil and the suffering of war is limited only to Ukrainians.” In early May this year, Ukrainian drones appeared near Moscow, the capital. Although it was shot down by anti-aircraft fire or lost to jamming electronic warfare and crashed, it gave a greater shock to the Russians than the advance of pro-Ukrainian Russian units through the border crossing and Belgorod in April.

Drone attacks on Moscow, which Ukraine has not officially recognized, have continued since, with four in July alone and one last week. No deaths or serious injuries have yet occurred as the outer walls of high-rise apartments were damaged and office buildings were only partially destroyed.
