Prime Minister Narendra Modi lays foundation stone for the development of 508 railway stations under the Amrit Bharat scheme

New Delhi: The Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for the development of 508 railway stations in the country as part of the Amrit Bharat scheme. The groundbreaking ceremony was done through video conferencing. It will also include 25 stations on the Southern Railway, including five in Kerala.

The Prime Minister said that around 1300 railway stations in the country will be modernized under the Amrit Bharat scheme. The stations will be modernized as part of the project. 508 stations with foundation stones will start operations today. Around Rs 25,000 crore has been earmarked for the development of stations. He also pointed out that the project is a big step forward for the common people of the country.

Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan have the highest number of stations – 55 each. These railway stations are in 27 states and union territories like Bihar-49, Maharashtra-44, West Bengal-37, Madhya Pradesh-34 and Assam-32. Kasaragod, Payyannur, Vadakara, Tirur, Shornur and Mangalore stations in Palakkad division will be upgraded in the first phase. Nagercoil station is included in Thiruvananthapuram division.

Railway stations will be upgraded with modern amenities for passengers. Newly designed transport systems will be attached to the station. The construction of the station buildings will be in accordance with the local culture and architectural styles. Railways has earmarked Rs 24,470 crore for the development of stations.

1275 stations in the country including 93 stations of the Southern Railway will be upgraded under the Amrit Bharat project in various phases. It will include 27 stations in Kerala. As part of the project, footbridges, lifts, escalators, parking facilities, rest rooms, surveillance cameras, generators and information communication systems will be constructed at the stations. This will also include increasing the length and height of the platforms, installing more seats and constructing a new road to the station.
