Inter Miami fired the janitor who asked for a signature Lionel Messi ahead of facing Orlando City in the round of 32 of the 2023 Leagues Cup at DVR PNK Stadium, Miami, last August 2.

A cleaning service worker from Colombia, Cristian Salamanca, is a Messi fan. The moment of meeting Messi was not wasted by Salamanca asking for an autograph.

Being a cleaner during Inter Miami vs Orlando City was Salamanca’s first time working for the United States League club. He was surprised when he saw Messi get off the team bus.

“I was in charge of cleaning the toilets in the sector where the team bus was parked. Luckily I was outside the toilet when the team arrived and all the players came out. The last player to leave was Messi,” Salamanca told La Nacion.

Quoted from Sport Bible, all workers at Inter Miami and DVR PNK Stadium have received orders not to disturb Messi. All workers are asked to remain professional when meeting La Pulga.

Salamanca didn’t care about the rules. While wearing the Argentina national team jersey under his work costume, Salamanca immediately approached Messi and asked for the 36-year striker’s signature.

“I shouted to Messi: ‘Hey, world champion!’. He looked at me. I lifted my work suit, I had the Argentina jersey on the inside and gave him a marker,” said Salamanca.

“He gave me an autograph. Security came right away, they took me out and fired me from my job. But it was worth every second,” Salamanca added.

Salamanca’s wife was then asked to come to the DVR PNK Stadium to pick up her sacked husband’s belongings.
