Van der Sloot spoke from the American prison with crime reporter John van den Heuvel. He is resigned and he actually assumes that he may never be released again. So that basically means he will have to stay behind bars until the end of his life. And he seems to agree with that a bit.
Case-Holoway
Natalee Holloway was on vacation in Aruba in 2005. She disappeared after meeting Joran van der Sloot on the beach. He was arrested, but not prosecuted for this case. The case that is now playing in the US revolves around extortion. The Holloway family would have paid $ 25,000 to Joran van der Sloot. In return, he would point out Natalee’s location. Nothing came of that. To this day, Natalee has not been found.
It is unclear whether there will be a lawsuit. A settlement is being negotiated, reports Van den Heuvel. “What is happening behind the scenes is that a deal is being discussed between the Public Prosecution Service and the lawyers. This would mean that Joran admits guilt, that he gives full disclosure about the extortion case. But there is already a lot of evidence in. It is also about the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, that he tells the full truth in it.” A lower sentence would then follow for Van der Sloot.
Lots of lies
Van der Sloot told many lies around the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. He himself has admitted to being a liar. “I understand very well that the Public Prosecution Service in America does not happen overnight,” says Van den Heuvel. “They also want to link him to a lie detector and investigate his statements themselves. Only when it is conclusively established what happened will a deal be a serious option.”
Natelee’s family and Joran van der Sloot’s American lawyer have not responded to the possible deal today. Van der Sloot has already been sentenced to 28 years in prison in Peru for the murder of Stephany Flores. And up to 18 years for drug trafficking. He still has to serve those sentences in Peru.
Van der Sloot himself says in De Telegraaf to hope that he can return to Peru soon. “My lawyers are talking to the Public Prosecution Service about what will happen next. I hope this will all be dealt with quickly and that I can go back to Peru. Conditions in Challapalca prison are also not pleasant, but I am not so isolated there as here and I am at least a little closer to my daughter Dushi and her mother Leidy,” says Van der Sloot.
