Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia has fired hypersonic missiles across Ukraine after an oil tanker was hit by Ukrainian forces.
In a speech on the night of the 5th local time, President Zelensky said that Russia had hit the southern Zaporizhzhya and western Khmelnitsky regions with hypersonic missiles “Kinzhal” and cruise missiles “Kalibur”.
President Zelensky explained that some of the missiles were intercepted by the air defense network, saying that the domestic company ‘Motor Sitch’, which produces aircraft engines, seems to have been targeted.
The Kinjal is a hypersonic missile that flies at more than five times the speed of sound, and is known to be difficult to defend with Patriot missiles provided by the United States.
The Russian attack comes a day after Ukraine attacked a Russian oil tanker in the Black Sea using a remote-controlled drone boat.
Ukraine has indicated that it will intensify its attacks on targets in the Black Sea in the future, including designating six Russian ports as risk areas.
