Scientists now hope that those ancient black holes can teach them how black holes affect the space around them by studying the super-hot gases that flow around them. They may also provide new insights into the formation of black holes during the baby years of the universe.
After all, some must have grown extremely fast during those first hundreds of millions of years, even faster than is theoretically considered possible. That conundrum “is one of the great problems of modern astronomy”, said the astronomer Masafusa Onoue from Peking University in National Geographic magazine in July.
