Subaru Levorg Layback: A More Adventurous Version of the Practical and Fun Station Wagon

The practical and fun station wagon will get a more adventurous version that bets on the style of SUVs and crossovers.

Although the Levorg model has already disappeared from Subaru’s European offer, it still lives on in its home Japanese market. The car has been offered in the second generation since 2020, which will also soon receive a new version. She got a name Laybackshould be introduced during the autumn and should focus on the adventurous style of SUVs and crossovers.

According to the automaker, the new version was developed specifically for the Japanese market, where it should bring a unique SUV. However, from the description known so far, it seems that the new Subaru Levorg Layback could be a smaller alternative to the popular Subaru Outback.

Together with the announcement of the new model, the automaker also published several images that offer the first taste of the changed design. The Layback model thus gets, for example, a revised front bumper, which impresses with its prominent intake holes on the sides.

Also new is the radiator grille, which is wider and decorated with a chrome line connecting the front LED headlights. In the undercarriage with plastic edges, we see newly shaped aluminum wheels and there is also plastic threshold protection. One look inside the cabin reveals two-tone leather upholstery with gold stitching.

Technical specifications have not yet been published by the automaker, but it is assumed that, with regard to better off-road characteristics, the Levorg will offer a higher ground clearance and modified chassis components. The standard is the proven all-wheel drive Subaru Symmetrical AWD.

They can appear under the hood right away two power units, in both cases a turbocharged four-cylinder boxer, shared with the regular Levorg. The basis is a 1.8-liter engine that offers a maximum output of 130 kW, a more powerful 2.4-liter engine (shared with the current WRX) offers 202 kW.

The automaker plans to start pre-sales on the domestic market during the seventh of September, so it is very likely that we will soon learn more about the new product. Considering the unavailability of the basic Levorg on our market, however, we fear that the Layback version will not arrive either, even though it might appeal to more customers than the classic station wagon.
