Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has been sentenced to three years in prison for corruption by a court in Islamabad. During his time as prime minister, he is said to have sold gifts he received on visits abroad. He would have earned more than 600,000 euros with the sale.

Khan was free pending the verdict. He has since been arrested at his home in Lahore. His party says he has already appealed to the Supreme Court.

Khan says he is innocent. He is now leader of the opposition and the conviction may prevent him from taking part in the elections that will be held at the latest in early November.

Dropped off

His prime ministership came to an end in April last year when parliament passed a no-confidence motion against him. Subsequently, several criminal charges were filed against him.

He was arrested a month later. That led to bloody riots. His supporters took to the streets in several places in the country.
