Speculation on AMD’s RX 8000 Series: No High-End GPUs for Next Generation?

Although the entire lineup of the current series of graphics cards from AMD is not even out yet (today we wrote about the upcoming “mid-range” model), there has been speculation for some time about the next generation, i.e. the RX 8000, which will be powered by the RDNA 4 architecture.

An insider came with very surprising information today Kepler, which in the past has already brought several subsequently confirmed reports. He claims (a appeals with 3 of its sources right away) that AMD will completely skip the high-end for the next generation of GPUs and only release lower models. He compares the situation to the RDNA 1 or Polaris generations, where the company also introduced models only for the mid-range and below.

Still, it would be a rather strange decision. Both RDNA 2 and the current RDNA 3 are trying to compete in the high-end as well, although AMD did not provide an answer for Nvidia’s top model in the form of the RTX 4090. This would be a step back anyway, while Intel, which entered the market last year with its Arc cards, respectively their first generation Alchemist, has ambitious plans for the future and wants to offer high-end models as well. The second generation of Battlemage should be ready for the first half of next year.

In any case, AMD has one advantage over Nvidia, unless plans change. RDNA 4 should be released in 2024, while the RTX 50 series is headed for 2025 according to the official roadmap. Incidentally, AMD is also preparing the RDNA 3.5 architecture, but it will not be used for separate graphics cards. RDNA 3.5 is intended only for integrated graphics chips, including the PlayStation 5 Pro console.
