Inter Miami owners are reaping the rewards of their investment in seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi.
Ares Management Corporation will become the club’s second investment firm in Major League Soccer after completing a US$75 million preferred investment in Inter Miami and Lionel Messi. The club said in a statement that they will use the money for expansion efforts including their ongoing stadium project.
Jorge Mas’ statement on Friday said: “Ares has been a key contributor in accelerating Inter Miami’s growth over the past two years. This latest investment comes at a turning point for the club as it includes the planned development of our new stadium and the arrival of Lionel Messi, among other important initiatives.”
Messi is already paying off for Inter Miami
This comes just a few weeks after Messi’s debut in Miami. It was a historic moment for the league as it attracted millions of international viewers. The Argentine’s arrival catapulted the league and club into the international limelight. His game-winning free-kick against Cruz Azul racked up over 50 million views on social media in just one day.
It is not clear which conditions are attached to the preferred capital; Ares may receive a fixed rate of return, an income share, or the option to convert into common stock. Depending on the type of shares, the selling price may be higher than usual.
New investment firm adds value to Inter Miami with Messi in squad
Sportico previously valued Inter Miami at $585 million, the 10th-highest value in MLS. However, this happened before the team signed Lionel Messi, which completely changed the club’s financial situation.
Inter Miami managing owner Jorge Mas predicted the club’s revenue would triple in the following 12 months. He reckons Messi will take the club’s value up to $1.5 billion next year.
