Jakarta Struggles to Compete with Vietnam in Shoe Trade with the EU: An Analysis of the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA)

Jakarta

The value of trade in shoes between Vietnam and the European Union is even said to be 4 times greater than that of Indonesia and the European Union.

“There is Vietnam, it has a smaller population, smaller area, but can be number 1. Is that right? It feels like we were ahead of Vietnam, but now he has beaten us,” he said at the closing of The 40th International Footwear Conference 2023 in Jakarta, Friday ( 4/8/2023).

“Vietnam’s trade volume with the European Union is 4 times greater than ours,” continued the man who is usually called Zulhas.

According to him, this cannot be separated from the incomplete negotiations on the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA). While Vietnam already has a CEPA.

The agreement allows Vietnam to export goods to the European Union tax-free. Meanwhile, Indonesia still has to pay 9% tax.

“Why? Only one reason. He has a CEPA. With the EU we don’t. We don’t get 9% tax, he doesn’t. So we lose our heads, lose our minds. So we have to take this back. Hopefully until the end of this year CEPA with We can complete the EU. So that in 2-3 years, hopefully we can (export) these shoes be ranked number 1 again,” he explained.

Zulhas targets Indonesia’s cooperation negotiations with the European Union to be completed by the end of the year. The hope is that Indonesia can shift Vietnam in the first position.

On that occasion, Zulhas also highlighted Indonesia’s defeat in terms of lobster exports. Even though Vietnam had studied and imported lobster seeds from Indonesia.

“Vietnam used to learn from us. The big prawns, lobsters he took seeds while studying. Now the biggest exports are from Vietnam, even though they took seeds from us,” he concluded.
