The biggest critic of the Kremlin, Alexei Navalny, received a new sentence of 19 years in prison, reports the BBC. He was found guilty of “founding and financing an extremist organization”. The opposition politician pleaded not guilty.
Russian prosecutors demanded 20 years in prison for Navalny
Navalny is serving a nine-year sentence on fraud charges that his supporters say are politically motivated.
Since his arrest in 2021, he has been held in a remote, high-security penal colony. The trial was held behind closed doors.
