European Countries Lift Restrictions on Japanese Food Imports: Attention Turns to Korea’s Regulations

[앵커]

After the announcement of the IAEA’s final report on the plan to discharge contaminated water from Fukushima, European countries have recently lifted restrictions on imports of Japanese food one after another.

Countries that maintain import restrictions after the middle of this month are Korea and China, and attention is focused on the prospect of Korea’s Japanese food regulation in the future.

The EU, Norway and Iceland have lifted all import restrictions on Japanese food that have been maintained since the Fukushima nuclear accident in 2011.

The Japanese government immediately welcomed this move.

[마쓰노 히로카즈 / 관방장관 : 이번에 EU를 비롯해 노르웨이, 아이슬란드가 규제를 철폐한 것은 피해 지역의 부흥을 뒷받침하는 것으로 환영합니다.]

Since the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident, 55 countries and regions have placed restrictions on Japanese food.

After the release of the IAEA report on the discharge of contaminated water, an increasing number of countries have begun to abolish regulations.

After the 15th, only 7 countries, including Korea, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, are expected to maintain regulations.

Excluding Korea and Taiwan, most of them are places where sharp confrontations are established with Western countries such as the United States in diplomacy, security, and economic sectors.

First of all, the Korean government has repeatedly emphasized that the safety of the discharge of contaminated water and whether or not there are import restrictions are separate.

[우영택 / 식약처 수입식품안전정책국장 : 오염수 방류하고 관계없이 저희는 현 규제 체제를 유지하는 것으로 계속 진행할 계획입니다.]

He also emphasized that, unlike Europe, countries adjacent to Japan have strengthened regulations.

However, it seems that the confrontation between the West and China and Russia over restrictions on Japanese food imports is becoming increasingly clear.

As for the Korean government, it seems that the struggle for the justification and logic to maintain Japanese food import regulations will grow.
