The Church as a Place for All: Pope Francis’ Message to Young People

In his introductory article, the editorial director of the Vatican Communications Department, Andrea Tornielli, reflected on the speech of Pope Francis during the reception of young people participating in the World Youth Day in Lisbon, and in particular on the Holy Father’s talk about the Church as a place for all and about God’s everlasting love for us.

The Church is a place for everyone, a phrase repeated by His Holiness Pope Francis more than once on Thursday evening in his speech presiding over the reception of young people participating in the International Youth Day in Lisbon. This phrase is also the focus of an introductory article by the editorial director of the Vatican Department of Communications, Andrea Tornielli, in which he wanted to reflect on the speech of Pope Francis addressed to half a million young men and women. The managing editor said that this message can be considered a summary of Pope Francis’ ten pontificate years.

In his article, Tornielli delved into the words of the Holy Father, in which he explained what it means to have a place for everyone in the Church, as Pope Francis stressed at the reception that no one is useless or superfluous. The Holy Father also emphasized in his word that God loves us as we are, with our shortcomings and limitations and with our desire to move forward in life. Tornielli also reminded of Pope Francis’ invitation to the large numbers of young people to trust in God’s love for us, for God is a Father, a Father who loves us.

And the editorial director continued his talk about this message that Pope Francis sends, and he said that in a time when everyone is commenting and not listening, there is no more attractive or revolutionary message, indicating that there are those who love us as we are, forgive us always and wait for us with open arms, so there are no conditions for meeting. Jesus’ embrace, it suffices to be there when he passes, as did Zacchaeus, who, according to the editor-in-chief, felt loved and forgiven for the first time when Jesus told him that he would stay in his house, and so he realized, thanks to this experience of mercy, that he was a sinner.

Andrea Tornielli concluded by stressing that this is the message that Pope Francis sends to young people, a message that is the key to evangelization today.
