Rainy season in Guatemala: 21 deaths and more than a million affected

Guatemala has registered 21 deaths and more than a million people affected during the rainy season, which began last May.

As stated on Thursday by the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED), the northwestern region of the country is the most affected by the torrential rains of the last eight days.

The 21 registered deaths accumulate mainly in the departments of Quetzaltenango, Alta Verapaz and Escuintla, according to the same source.

The civil protection institution pointed out that the season has also left 4 people injured. In addition, 1.2 million Guatemalans affected and 1,302 homeless, but only 94 are sheltered.

According to official information, since May, when the rainy season began, 520 incidents have been recorded.

Guatemala is one of the countries most prone to natural disasters in the world due to floods or landslides caused by rain, according to reports from international organizations.

During 2022, Guatemala recorded 65 deaths, 10 missing people and more than 62,000 evacuees due to the rainy season, which runs from May to October, leaving more than 5.9 million affected.
