On July 13, word came that actors in Hollywood are going on strike. This was confirmed by the trade union SAG-AFTRA, which has over 160,000 members.
The screenwriters, who are organized in the WGA union, went on strike in May. This is the first double strike since 1960.
Hollywood stars on strike
Now it is being reported that several of the movie city’s most recognized and highest paid actors have donated several million dollars to unemployed actors, as the strike is now in its fourth week.

On Wednesday, the WGA also announced that the writers and the major film studios will meet next Friday. This is the first meeting between the warring parties since the strike began in May.
Fighting for better working conditions
Both unions believe that the entertainment industry has changed significantly, as streaming services such as Netflix, Disney +, HBO MAX and more have become dominant.
At the same time, they believe that their work is challenged by artificial intelligence, whose abilities are constantly being developed.
Both professional groups are now fighting for more pay and better working conditions.
Struggling financially: – Difficult
The entertainment industry and the state of California, where Hollywood is located, are also suffering financially during the strike. The same is done by the strikers, who are not paid.
This has now led to some of the highest paid film stars turning up the page and donating millions to their striking colleagues.
The list of celebrities who have donated large sums to SAG-AFTRA’s support box includes George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Leonardo DiCaprio, Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts and Oprah Winfrey.
According to AFP, the association has collected over 15 million dollars – around 115 million Norwegian kroner – in the last three weeks.

Huge differences
According to SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher, 86 percent of the association’s members earn less than $26,500 a year. This corresponds to around NOK 260,000.

At the other end of the scale, the highest paid actors in Hollywood earn many millions a year – for example Dwayne Johnson who earned over NOK 550 million from 2019 to 2020.
In 2020, according to the business magazine Forbes, Nicole Kidman earned around NOK 191 million, while Meryl Streep raked in around NOK 220 million.
