WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Mongolian Prime Minister Oyun Erdene said on Thursday that he would strengthen cooperation with the United States in developing rare earth deposits in Mongolia, during a visit to the United States. He also expressed concern that a “new Cold War” between the United States and China would have a negative impact on the global economy.
Oyun Erdene told Reuters that he had met with U.S. Vice President Harris on Wednesday and agreed to sign an open skies agreement.
“We also discussed the possibility of cooperating in the mining of important minerals such as rare earths and copper,” he said.
Mongolia and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding on rare earths and important minerals in June. I would like to further strengthen the cooperative relationship.
Mongolia also wants to build good relations with China, which has the world’s largest rare earth deposits.
“We cannot endure a new Cold War,” he said, urging China to fulfill its responsibilities as a major power.
