A new study, in which more than 100,000 people took part, shows that the time of day you decide to have breakfast indicates the risk of diabetes.
Spanish scientists found that eating breakfast after 9:00 a.m. increased the risk of developing diabetes by up to 59% compared to participants who ate breakfast before 8:00 a.m.
It’s not a good idea to skip breakfast either, because participants who adopted this habit also faced a higher risk of developing diabetes.
The study, conducted by Barcelona Institute of Global Healthalso shows that dinner eaten late, i.e. after 10:00 p.m., is associated with an increased risk of disease.
Study author Dr. Manolis Kogevinas says: “our results suggest that the first meal of the day taken before 8:00 am and the last meal of the day taken before 7:00 pm reduce the incidence of type 2 diabetes.”
Experts have discovered that the metabolism needs this to keep the biological clock, also known as the circadian rhythm, afloat. It responds to light as a signal to be awake during the day and to darkness as a signal to sleep.
Previous studies suggest that what you eat in sync with your circadian rhythm can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity.
