Masha Gessen Awarded Hannah Arendt Prize for Political Thinking

Bremen (dpa) – Masha Gessen received this year’s Hannah Arendt Prize for political thinking. According to the jury, Gessen is one of the bravest chroniclers of the time, as stated in a statement on Thursday. Gessen’s books, essays and presence open up new perspectives that help to understand a world undergoing accelerated change, the award’s association said. Gessen, born in Moscow in 1967, writes about political tendencies and conflicts in US and Russian society. Gessen lives in New York City, United States.

The Hannah Arendt Prize is endowed with 10,000 euros. The award is named after the totalitarianism researcher Hannah Arendt (1906-1975). The prize is intended to honor people who, in the tradition of Arendt, contribute to public political thought and action. According to the information, an independent, international jury decides on the award. The prize is awarded by a sponsoring association, the Bremen government and the Heinrich Böll Foundations in Berlin and Bremen. The award ceremony is scheduled for December 15th in Bremen City Hall.
