Have you ever wondered what the true performance of Xbox Series X consoles would be if they were put directly against a PC using the same test environment? Of course, no need to try to install Windows 11 on Xbox. The Digital Foundry YouTube channel has found another way to do this.

PC gaming on Xbox Series X

Journalists from Digital Foundry used the “AMD 4800S Desktop Kit” platform for this purpose, which, to put it simply, is simply an APU from the Xbox Series X mounted on a computer motherboard, e.g. with a PCIe X4 slot. These devices are only available on the Chinese market, and the processors in them come from recalled series with a damaged graphics chip.

For this reason, they did not make it to the Xbox Series X consoles. The lack of a functioning GPU can be a bit of a problem in gaming, but the testers solved this problem by placing the Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics card in the PCIe slot. I don’t know if this is a good choice, because the reviewer himself admits that the RX 6700 would be a more suitable card for the console (PS5). The 4800S Desktop Kit has built-in GDDR6 memory, instead of the standard DDR4 or DDR5 memory found in a PC.

Recording host Richard Leadbetter, tested several games on the selected configuration, using different graphics settings, trying to match those on the console. The Youtuber tried to compare the 4800S to the PC Ryzen 5 3600, with which the Zen 2 generation system should have a lot in common.

For example, Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War achieves an average result of 92 fps in 1080p resolution, while the aforementioned Ryzen 5 3600 averages around 94 fps. In turn, Metro: Exodus Enhanced Edition on the Xbox system runs at 86 fps, and on its “PC brother” about 50% faster. Therefore, it is not easy to compare a typical console system, because it behaves quite unpredictably in different games.

Similarly, in Counter Strike: Global Offensive – the result of 4800S (approx. 140 fps) was the worst among the compared systems. Cyberpunk 2077 was already on the verge of playability, reaching barely 40 fps in 1080p. In conclusion, the Zen 2 generation system is a bit of a mouse due to its age and the latest Intel CPUs from the 13th generation and AMD from the Ryzen 7000 family definitely outclass it. The author of the material in the summary advises against trying to buy the AMD 4800S Desktop Kit – it’s not worth it, you’ll be disappointed.
