The US State Department announced yesterday (2nd) that it had ordered some employees and their families to withdraw from the US Embassy in Niger, where a military coup occurred on the 26th.
State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement that day, “Given the situation in Niger, we have ordered non-emergency staff and their families to return home.”
“The U.S. Embassy in Niger has suspended daily operations and is only providing emergency assistance to U.S. citizens residing in Niger,” it said.
In this regard, ‘Reuters’ reported, citing a US government official who requested anonymity, that key staff members would remain at the embassy, and returning staff and their families would use private charter flights, not military aircraft.
Meanwhile, the State Department designated Niger on the same day as a ‘travel ban’, the highest level 4 of the travel advisory.
The State Department said in Niger that terrorist groups could attack foreign government facilities and areas visited by citizens of Western countries.
