“It was a pretty tough tournament for me in 2018. Both mentally and physically. It was horrible,” Murray was quoted as saying by Reuters.
The British tennis player was returning from hip surgery at the time. However, after the victory over the Romanian Marius Copil, he sobbed into the towel due to fatigue and did not start the next match with the Australian Alex de Minaur.
“It’s strange to come back here after five years, then I didn’t want to play at all. After that I didn’t enjoy it much. I won some amazing duels here, but I felt terrible. I couldn’t enjoy those triumphs because every night after he couldn’t sleep for the games because of the hip and everything,” he recalled. In 2019, Murray underwent another operation and subsequently resurrected his career.
The two-time Wimbledon winner won the first set in the duel with Nakashima thanks to a successful shortened game, in which he turned the situation from 2:5 to 7:5. In the second set, he got a break right at the beginning and served out the duel to win. Local fans also encouraged him during the match. Murray thanked them for their support.
“It’s great to be back, not having any problems, playing without pain and still fighting at a high level. I’ve come a long way in the last four or five years, but I’m happy to continue,” he added.
In the round of 16, Murray will face another American, the number one seed Taylor Fritz.
