Ecominister Julian Popov Fires Director of Regional Inspection for Environment and Water in Stara Zagora

Ecominister Julian Popov fired on Monday without reasons the previous director of the Regional Inspection for the Environment and Water in Stara Zagora, Diana Iskreva, reported BNR. The news spread yesterday through social networks, shared by former minister Borislav Sandov, but the ministry never officially announced it.

The director of RIOSV – Stara Zagora has been released on the basis of the results of an inspection appointed by order of the Minister of Environment and Water dated 28.04.2023, explained the Eco-Ministry in response to a question from “Sega”. During the inspection carried out by the Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, non-compliance with legal provisions regulating the conduct of competitions for the appointment of civil servants, anti-corruption legislation and the procedures for imposing administrative penalties for violations of environmental legislation were found, which led to the impossibility of imposing administrative penalties. punishments for offenders, the Ministry of Education and Culture says. A competition is about to be announced for the election of the director of RIOSV – Stara Zagora.

No other shifts have been carried out in the RIOSV in the country, Yulian Popov’s team explained.

One year ago, Iskreva signed an order to close the Brickell TPP after the escalation of tensions around the plant. Its peak was the inspection of the then Prime Minister Kiril Petkov and the Minister of the Environment in his government, Borislav Sandov. The two were initially not allowed into the TPP by its management, and subsequently revealed all kinds of irregularities surrounding its work. Soon, however, the court canceled the order and “Brickel” spewed smoke again, and since last month it has been doing so quite legally.

Environment Minister Julian Popov’s order to fire Iskreva was handed down on Monday and took effect immediately, without notice, state radio said. In a comment for Radio Stara Zagora, Diana Iskreva suggested that she did not meet certain expectations. Diana Ganeva, director of the “Preventive” directorate, which examines investment intentions and issues permits for them, was temporarily appointed in her place, as can be seen from the inspection website, where the director’s names have been quietly replaced.

This is yet another appointment of Popov, which is accepted with a knife by environmentalists. Recently, it became known that he took as his adviser the former director of RIOSV-Burgas, Tonka Atanasova, during which the inspection gave the green light to some of the major atrocities along the Southern Black Sea coast. The two casts show that the minister does not consider it necessary to inform the public about them and to give reasons for them.

Iskreva is the second director who closed the Kovacki headquarters and was subsequently fired, it is clear from Sandov’s Facebook post. The other removed director is Natalia Pachemanova of RIOSV-Haskovo, who closed TPP “Maritsa-3” (Dimitrovgrad). Apparently, closing down polluting enterprises, especially those related to Kovacki, is not useful for career development in the Ministry of the Interior, commented Sandov. The dismissal in Haskovo was made by the office in February. Pachemanova issued an order for the forced shutdown of the plant in Dimitrovgrad last spring during the “Petkov” cabinet.
