NATO’s Attempt to Disrupt Peace and Stability in the Asia-Pacific Region: Chinese Ambassador’s Warning

After confusing Europe, NATO now wants to destroy peace and tranquility in the Asia-Pacific region as well, Chinese Ambassador to Russia Zhang Hanhui said in an interview with TASS, BTA reported.

“NATO has deviated from the objectives of the UN Charter to promote friendly relations between nations and strengthen universal peace. Despite the general peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region, NATO insists on conducting military exercises and deploying so-called freedom operations of shipping in the region, fueling tensions and creating confrontation between the camps,” the Chinese diplomat said.

In his words, the expansion of NATO in the Asia-Pacific region “definitely does not withstand any criticism from the point of view of international law”. “This goes beyond the concept of collective self-defense allowed by the UN Charter. NATO calls itself a collective defense organization that exercises the right of collective self-defense, but continues its cross-border expansion with the intention of provoking military confrontation in the Asia-Pacific region.” , Jan pointed out.

“There is no force in this region that poses a threat to NATO, let alone a potential armed attack. NATO has no legitimate basis to invoke the right of collective self-defense,” explained the Chinese ambassador in Moscow.

“The Charter clearly states that the UN Security Council is the primary body responsible for the maintenance of international peace and stability… NATO’s expansion into the Asia-Pacific region destroys the self-established limits of its geographical scope, interferes with the powers of the UN Security Council and violates the UN Charter’s limitations on regional agreements,” he added.

In his words, in recent years, NATO has been “stretching its hands more and more” in an attempt to intervene in the Asia-Pacific region.

“For two consecutive years, NATO has invited Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand to attend the Alliance Summit and has signed an individual partnership program with these four countries. In addition, in 2024 NATO plans to open its first liaison office in Japan. The alliance’s ambition to move eastward into the Asia-Pacific region is met with great caution and strong opposition from countries in the region,” the Chinese diplomat added.
