Advancing in Dengue Control: Collaboration between Ministry of Health and Conicet to Develop Biolarvicides and Vaccines

The holder of the health portfolio, doctor Luis Medina Ruizmet with references from the Conicet and the Experimental Station with the aim of advancing in the projects they develop together, which are: the creation of a vaccine to combat dengue and a biolarvicide that kills the larvae in the containers where they may be stagnant and does not harm the environment.

Medina Ruiz said that biolarvicides can be developed jointly, which are bacteria that eliminate or control mosquito larvae, in this case Aedes Aegypti, which is the most effective way to control the dengue epidemic.

“Today the possibility of producing, in 45 to 60 days, biolarvicides locally and controlling the focus and epidemic is formally established. Producing it locally, in the province, is important because it is not only for Tucumán, but for the entire region, and it is a great advance for our health,” said the minister.

In this sense, the official said that everything that is beneficial for the community, for the patients, the Health System, is always open. “Not only do we do care work, but we also do research and support local businesses,” he said.

For his part, Josephine Racedoa CONICET researcher, explained that the biolarvicide is a product that already exists in other countries, but is not available here: “Considering that we have the knowledge, strengths, and institutions to produce it, we approached the Ministry to offer this possibility. to make a local factory of this biolarvicide”.

Racedo indicated that it is safe for human health, the environment and that it is effective in combating Aedes Aegypti, which is what transmits dengue fever and other diseases. “The desire with which the Ministry wants to be part of this great project was admirable, that is why we are working in an articulated way to achieve it,” he highlighted.

In the opportunity, Augustus Bellomio, director of Conicet NOA Sur, said that they have been working together with the Ministry of Health for a long time and that ties are now being strengthened to focus on vector-borne diseases, specifically dengue. “We are working on the application of a biolarvicide that is harmless to humans and that is a free product. We will carry out a pilot test to fine-tune the conditions, so that it is as effective as possible, ”he indicated, while explaining that it acts on the larvae that develop in the water.

Lastly, the engineer by Gustavo Dirk Trottey, director of the Conicet NOA Sur CCT Project, commented that they are formally carrying out work with the province, trying to bring together all the tools, research and innovations that were generated from the 23 institutes that Conicet has. “We have been articulating with the minister and with all the technical teams to have tools aimed at mitigating the dengue epidemic. We are also working with some tests pointing to a vaccine for dengue and with other activities, ”he said.

Gustavo Dirk Trotteyn stressed that working together is an imperial necessity, at the provincial and national level, mainly to join efforts and fight a problem such as dengue. “Regarding the vaccine, we are working on an agreement with the Government of Cuba to start the tests in the province that aim to evaluate the vaccine candidates,” he concluded.
