“Find malware on macOS” is probably not even in the top ten phrases that come to mind when you want to talk to artificial intelligence. However, someone did it and got a stunningly good result. Artificial intelligence was “let in” to the dark web and helped to discover a real threat.
ChatGPT found malware on macOS
Guardz Cyber Intelligence Research (CIR) employees used ChatGPT to search for new threats. The bot redirected them to a Russian shady forum, where they came across ads for a malware called ShadowVault. The malicious program has been available since April 2023 and costs $60,000.
Specialists immediately took care of the find. Their analysis shows that it is a type program Hidden Virtual Network Computing (HVNC) that allows remote access to a victim’s Mac without their knowledge. The sellers of ShadowVault claim that it gives full access to the infected computer, avoiding removal on reboot. Additional functions can be purchased individually, depending on your needs.
There is no evidence to suggest that ShadowVault was used in a real attack. Apple does not comment on the case, and CIR did not find anything either. However, we have reason to be concerned. Macs are growing in popularity in business, which means they are attractive targets for industrial spies.
On the one hand, we have an example of how artificial intelligence can help at work, and on the other, a harbinger of the end of carefree – you will have to install antiviruses on Macs.
