Donald Trump charged with attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 United States (US) election. The former US President was furious over the charges against him.
Reported by AFP, Wednesday (2/8/2023), Trump was charged with three counts of conspiring to defraud the United States and one count of obstructing the official process, related to a joint meeting of Congress on January 6, 2021 which was held to certify Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election.
The charges against Trump are set out in a 45-page document filed by special counsel Jack Smith.
“The aim of the conspiracy was to overturn the lawful results of the 2020 presidential election by using deliberately fabricated false claims of election fraud,” the indictment filed against Trump said.
Smith has filed charges against Trump for alleged wrongdoing in handling secret government documents. Trump is also facing trial in New York on charges of paying hush money to a porn star ahead of the 2016 election.
“Despite the defeat, the defendant is determined to stay in power,” the indictment filed against Trump said.
“Thus, for more than two months after voting day on November 3, 2020, the defendant spread lies that there had been fraud which determined the outcome of the election and that he actually won,” the indictment added.
“These claims were false, and the defendant knew those claims were false,” said the indictment against Trump.
The indictment documents six co-conspirators named, but none have been identified by name. Trump is the only defendant to be named clearly.
According to US media reports, Donald Trump will begin trial on that charge on Thursday (3/8) tomorrow US time.
